Design and Technology
Design Technology Lead: Mrs Angela Aspin
At Lever House Primary School in Farington, our intent when teaching Design and Technology, is to inspire in children, a curiosity and fascination about the world and people within it. Design and technology prepares children to take part in the development of tomorrow’s rapidly changing world. We aim to think creatively and encourage children to make positive changes to their quality of life. The subject encourages children to become creative problem-solvers, both as individuals and as part of a team. Our hope is that it enables them to develop ideas and eventually make products. The children are required to plan and evaluate effectiveness and modify their designs and methods accordingly.
In ensuring high standards of teaching and learning in D&T, we implement a curriculum that is progressive throughout the whole school. In Key stage 1 & Key stage 2, D&T is taught as part of a half-termly topic on a two year rolling programme, focusing on knowledge and skills stated in the National Curriculum. In KS1 our curriculum is mainly based on teaching children skills which will be developed and built on as they progress through school.
In both Key Stages, the children take part in many ‘topic based” activities and are given opportunities for practical activities and mathematical games; problem solving; individual, group and whole class work; a range of calculation methods; working with an iPad or computer as a learning tool, a range of open and closed tasks including STEM projects.
